WiFire (Verdict: Unbelievably Powerful!)

One of our commenters said it best when he said that if it weren’t for WiFi that business traveling would totally suck. And we would have to agree with our reader (JD). However, while talking about things that suck, we’d like to add to that list being able to see a WiFi network but not having the strength to connect to it. You see, although your computer has a couple loops of antenna neatly coiled underneath the keyboard, you don’t always have the power to reach out to that robust free WiFi network; well, until now. Thanks to the advent of the Wi-Fire by hField Technologies we are finally able to boost our WiFi range which means we can also boost our productivity when we’re out and about.

According to their site, “the Wi-Fire provides interoperability with any 802.11 b/g access point and multiplies the effectiveness of wireless networks allowing users to connect to a WiFi network from up to 1,000 feet, more than three times the range of Airport cards and other 802.11 adapters, at significantly higher speeds, and even in locations where no wireless signal could be detected previously.”

So, with such bold claims and innumerable requests to review this product, we put the Mac version to the test. We started our evaluation by testing the range of the free WiFi in Union Square in NYC, which is one our favorite hotspots. We found that we were able to connect with our MacBookPro up to 1.5 blocks in any direction from the perimeter of Union Square. When we turned on the WiFire, which comes with an awesome retractable cable and mounting bracket, we found that we were able to gain a solid city block or more on our connection, which we thought was outstanding. But, what we thought was even more impressive was that we were able to pick up free WiFi from another carrier’s terminal at LaGuardia Airport! And, the same story was played over again at JFK, Dulles, and LAX.

In summary, the WiFire is THE accessory that we had been wanting for years, but never knew to ask for. We’re able to extend the WiFi from our hotel out to the beach, the WiFi from a neighboring hotel to ours, and most importantly, the WiFi from an overpriced coffee shop to our favorite coffee shop. If you’re looking to improve your internet connectivity thereby improving your productivity, then look no further than this wonderful gadget from the geniuses at hField technologies.

Not for macs the software for Leopard is not really functional it often causes kernal_task to eat up all my cpu cycles and nothing but restart will fix the issue. Great idea, but useless without functional software. Still no sign for their improved Version 2.0 software either even with a Summer 2008 release date.
